Grating Fasteners Basics

Grating Fasteners (also known as Grating Clips and G-Clips) are simple fasteners that allow bar grating to be attached to steel structures without the need for or welding or significant fabrication. Each connection can be made in just minutes using simple hand tools, and depending upon the style of grating clip used, a drill.  Grating fasteners are available in several different designs, all offering unique advantages depending upon the application.

G-Clips

Fastens grating to steel structures from above with hand tools; no drilling or welding. Models also available to attach sheets of grating to one another.

G-Clips Model GG fits 19 space gratings. Fastens grating to a horizontal-facing steel structural member edge. The Model GG G-Clip is the most common G-Clip.

G-Clip Model RSCGC, also known as Close Grip G-Clip, is a 316 stainless steel grating fastener used to fasten close mesh bar grating to metal or other structural shapes, where the structural flange is in a horizontal plane. The narrow grip-jaw on the clip allows it to be used on gratings with as little as 3/8” opening.

G-Clip Model WSSGG is a 316 stainless steel grating fastener used to fasten bar grating to metal or other structural shapes, where the structural flange is in a horizontal plane.  WSSGG G-Clips are identical to the standard galvanized GG Model G-Clips but are manufactured of 316 stainless steel.

G-Clip model YSSGG is a 316 stainless steel grating fastener used to fasten 1-1/2″ square mesh fiberglass grating to structural shapes where the structural flange is in a horizontal plane. Specially shaped top assembly is designed to fit 1-1/2″ square mesh.

G-Clip model XSSGG is a 316 stainless steel bar grating clip used to fasten bar grating to metal or other structural shapes, where the structural flange is in a horizontal plane. The model “X” top is a rectangular-shaped top and can fit a 3/4″ wide slot or a 1” wide slot between two bearing bars, depending upon the orientation in which the top is installed.

J-Bolts

J-Bolts are designed for use mounting instrumentation, equipment stands, and other objects to varying types of grating. The "J" portion of the J-Bolt hooks underneath one bar of the grating. The threaded portion of the J-Bolt protrudes above the top of the grating. The threaded portion can then be used to mount objects to the grating floor via the use of the appropriate nuts (and washers if necessary).

GM Clips

A fastener used to fasten lightweight devices to 19-space bar grating. As with J-Bolts, GM Clips are designed for use mounting instrumentation, equipment stands, and other objects to varying types of grating. It will withstand 1000 pounds of direct upward pull force.

Lindapter GF Clips

A high strength floor connector for securing rectangular open bar grating to the supporting steel without the need for drilling or welding in the field. The Lindapter GF Clips can accommodate different grating heights and member thicknesses via a multi-tier lower jaw.

GP1 Parallel Attachment Clips

The model GP-1 describes an assembly of fastener parts that can be used to fasten parallel grating panels to each other. The top part is a G-Clips unique top for better holding strength and to suit 19W4 grating. Second, the GP1’s patented bottom bar connects between the grating panel underside and projects sideways under the second grating panel. A hex-headed cap screw connects the two. Use of this model can reduce the deflection that often occurs when a single grating panel deflects downward due to traffic, and adjacent but unconnected panels cause an inadvertent trip hazard. By combining the strength of two panels, the load is shared, and deflection is lessened. Used properly, this can reduce trip hazards. The GP1 clip is designed to be used in conjunction with a G-Clip.

Saddle Clips F-10

The most common saddle clip, this clip is used to fasten 19-space grating to structures. It has an oval-shaped hole, which will accommodate either a screw or a carriage bolt. A popular method of attaching grating to structures involves formed metal pieces, placed onto the grating top surface and attached with a suitable screw or bolt to the structure. All of our F-10 grating clips are designed for use with a 0.25” diameter fastener.

Saddle Clips I-60

I-60 saddle clips are designed for use on fiberglass grating, either bar grating or square mesh grating. A convenient method of attaching grating to structures, saddle clips are a formed metal piece, placed onto the grating top surface and attached with a suitable screw or bolt to the structure. All of our I-60 saddle clips are designed for use with a 0.25” diameter fastener.

Common Material & Finishes of Grating Fasteners

Grating Fasteners are available in different materials and coatings, which play a role in the suitability of the fasteners in different applications, such as enhancing resistance to corrosion from environmental elements. STS carries galvanized grating fasteners as well as steel and stainless steel grating fasteners.

Galvanized Grating Fasteners

Grating Fasteners are coated with a sacrificial zinc coating that acts as an anode to prevent the fastener underneath from corroding.

Hot Dipped Galvanized: Fasteners are dipped in a bath of molten zinc.

304 & 316 Stainless Steel Grating Fasteners

304 Stainless Steel Grating Fasteners are manufactured from austenitic 304 stainless steel. They have a chromium content of 17-19% and nickel content of 8-10%, yielding the common term 18-8 stainless steel. 304 stainless steel fasteners are known for their corrosion and heat resistance. Austenitic grade steels are high in chromium, with varying amounts of nickel, manganese, nitrogen and some carbon. The 10.5% minimum chromium content makes the metal approximately 200 times more resistant to corrosion than metals without chromium. 304 stainless steel fasteners are commonly used in applications that require general atmospheric corrosion resistance, such as chemical and food processing equipment, as well as marine and coastal facilities and other corrosive environments.

316 Stainless Steel Grating Fasteners are manufactured from 316 stainless steel, an austenitic alloy which differs from 304 stainless steel by its molybdenum content (2-3%) and a higher nickel content (10-14%) allowing for higher corrosion resistance. 316 stainless steel fasteners are known for their corrosion and heat resistance. Austenitic grade steels are high in chromium, with varying amounts of nickel, manganese, nitrogen and some carbon. The 10.5% minimum chromium content makes the metal approximately 200 times more resistant to corrosion than metals without chromium. 316 stainless steel fasteners are commonly used in applications that require general atmospheric corrosion resistance, such as chemical and food processing equipment, as well as marine and coastal facilities and other corrosive environments.
